A boys basketball player at Dupree High School in South Dakota died suddenly during practice Monday evening, authorities say.
Ziebach County Sheriff Gary Cudmore said the team was doing wind sprints when the student collapsed. Life-saving measures and CPR were performed until emergency responders arrived. Cudmore, who arrived after the first responders, said he drove the ambulance to Indian Health Services in Eagle Butte, while attempts to revive the player continued.
Authorities have not released the name of the student or his cause of death.
The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement is investigating the case, but officers were not immediately available for comment.
Calls to Dupree superintendent Gail Swenson and athletics director Mary Farlee were not immediately returned.
A town of about 525, Dupree is located about about 150 miles northeast of Rapid City on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.
