ABC is planning a holiday gift for comedy fans: another re-creation of classic Norman Lear sitcoms.
“Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” the collaboration between Lear and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel that premiered to big ratings and rave reviews in May, will return Dec. 18 with live episodes of Lear’s “All in the Family” and “Good Times,” the network announced Tuesday.
In May, “Live” presented re-created episodes of “Family” and “The Jeffersons,” both 1970s hits produced by Lear and Bud Yorkin, and featured a stellar cast that included Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Wanda Sykes and Kerry Washington. It won the Emmy for outstanding variety special.
Washington, who played Helen Willis in the May “Jeffersons” episode, joins Kimmel, Lear, Will Ferrell, Justin Theroux and Brent Miller as an executive producer of the holiday installment.
“Being a part of Norman Lear’s world was a career highlight; and working with great actors on these great shows was so much fun, we couldn’t resist tackling a holiday episode of ‘All in the Family’ and one of my favorites, ‘Good Times,’” Kimmel said in a statement.
Lear added his sentiments: “I don’t know which is greater – bringing back ‘Good Times’ or co-hosting with Jimmy Kimmel.”
ABC’s announcement did not include news on casting or which episodes will be performed. Kimmel and Lear kept the episodes a secret before the May broadcast.
