The 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards begins its weeklong run Monday with Night 1 of its five-night ceremony. The event, modified and virtual this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Top winners included HBO’s documentary The Apollo, which won for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, beating out among others Netflix’s high-profile Becoming about Michelle Obama. It spotlighted a trend at least on Night 1: several marquee titles up for awards were shut out, including Netflix’s buzzy Tiger King and ESPN’s The Last Dance.

Netflix did pick up a win in another marquee category, Outstanding Structured Reality Program, for Queer Eye. The streamer also picked up trophies for American Factory (for directing) and picked up two wins for Cheer.

Other multiple winners on Night 1 included VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race and CNN Films’ Apollo 11. Nat Geo picked up three wins for Life Below Zero, The Cave (both for cinematography) and National Geographic Presents Cosmos: Creating Possible Worlds (shortform).

A&E’s Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath won for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special in its last season, its second Emmy.

Nailed It! host and Emmy nominee Nicole Byer is hosting all five nights in the Creative Arts cycle, which runs tonight-Thursday with the digital-only ceremonies (an Emmys first) and wrap up with a 90-minute ceremony live Saturday night on FXX. The Creative Arts bonanza leads into Sunday’s 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel live on ABC.

Here are the winners of Night 1, the first 16 of the 100 categories to be awarded this week:
